Water polo is a ball game played in the water, where the players wear rather odd looking caps, and will guarantee you a significant tan after a few weeks (whether that’s a good or bad thing, I’ll leave it to you).
You would probably have some idea of what water polo is about, but the real question is, is it the right CCA for you?.On that note, what else should you know about water polo other than the part where you play with a ball?
There are many key elements to the sport. You need to be able to swim, have good ball sense, work well with your teammates and follow the game plan. However, the twist is…you have to do all of the above while an opponent is trying to drown pressure you! But do not worry about that, there is nothing you can’t learn and overcome! We train, on average, 3 times a week and each training session lasts about 2-3 hours.
Water polo is as physically demanding as it is mentally. Mistakes will be made, but that is part of the game. One thing that I have learnt after picking up this sport is to keep looking ahead and improving your own game. Mistakes are inevitable, but what matters more is that you pick yourself up. I believe that water polo has taught me this important life lesson and it has helped me remained steadfast amongst life’s many setbacks.
I hope that I haven’t scared you into thinking water polo is very difficult (but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t. Claudia Tan, currently playing in the girls water polo team, complained that I tricked her into thinking that water polo is easy). But seriously speaking, water polo may have a steeper learning curve compared to other sports, but there are many other reasons why you should join water polo. It is an opportunity to try new things, take a break from any IB-related things (believe me, you will need it), keep fit, and most importantly, get closer and bond with your teammates after spending all those hours together in the pool.
And if you aren’t yet convinced that water polo is the CCA for you, think about all the girls/guys you will attract with the hot bod that you would have developed from all the intense trainings!*
